Privacy Policy

The short version: this site doesn't track you. It sets no cookies, runs no tracking scripts, and carries no advertising. We do count visits, but from our server's own logs rather than from anything running in your browser. The only personal information the site holds is what you type into the contact form — used to write back to you, nothing else. Newsletter signups go straight to Substack and never touch us at all.

Who we are

This website, inmicaswords.com, is the official site of author Mica Boyd Johnston. It is operated by Wander Tribe, LLC ("we," "us," "our"). This policy explains what personal information the site collects, why, and what you can do about it.

What we collect

Only what you choose to give us. There are exactly two places on this site where you can submit anything:

• The contact form (on the contact page) — your name, your email address, the subject you pick from the dropdown, and your message.
• The newsletter signup (on the home, books, and about pages) — this one doesn't submit to us at all. Typing your address and pressing Subscribe takes you to our publication's own subscribe page on Substack, with the address carried across so you don't have to retype it. You complete the signup there, and Substack holds your subscription. We never receive or store it.

There are no accounts to create, no passwords, no profiles, and no payment details — books are bought on retailers' own sites, never here. We don't ask for your age, location, or phone number, and we don't buy or receive personal information about you from anyone else.

What we don't do

Because it's usually the part people actually want to know, here it is plainly. This site does not:

• set any cookies;
• load any third-party analytics or tracking script — no Google Analytics, no Meta Pixel, no heatmaps, no session recording, and nothing that follows you to other websites;
• show advertising or share anything with ad networks;
• sell, rent, or trade your personal information — not now, and not as a matter of policy;
• use affiliate or referral tracking codes on its links to Amazon, Lulu, or anywhere else;
• build a profile of you or try to identify you across other sites.

Cookies and browser storage

This site sets no cookies. It uses one small entry in your browser's local storage: if an announcement banner is showing at the top of the page and you close it, we store the value "1" so it stays closed on your next visit. That entry contains no personal information, is not an identifier, is never sent to us or to anyone else, and you can clear it any time through your browser settings.

How we use your information

• Contact form submissions are used to read and reply to your message. That's the entire purpose.
• Newsletter subscriptions are managed entirely by Substack — they send the mailings, handle unsubscribes, and hold the subscriber list. Every mailing carries an unsubscribe link, and Substack's privacy policy governs that data.

We don't use your information for automated decision-making or profiling, and we don't repurpose it for anything you didn't contact us about.

Who else handles it

We keep the list of companies touching your data as short as we can:

• Netlify hosts this website and stores contact form submissions. When you send the contact form, the message is stored in our Netlify account. Netlify also keeps standard server logs (see below). Netlify is based in the United States.
• Substack runs the newsletter. If you subscribe, your address lives with Substack, not with us — see their privacy policy for how they handle it.
• Sanity is the content management system where the site's words and images are written and stored, and where the images you see are served from. It holds the site's content — it does not receive your form submissions.

All three act as service providers processing information on our behalf. We don't send your details to any email marketing platform, CRM, advertiser, or data broker, because we don't use any.

What your browser loads from elsewhere

Viewing a page on this site causes your browser to request files from a small number of outside hosts. Any time your browser fetches a file from another company's server, that company can see your IP address and browser type — that's how the web works, and it's worth naming who they are:

• Adobe Fonts (use.typekit.net, p.typekit.net) — the display typeface used for headings.
• Sanity's image CDN (cdn.sanity.io) — book covers, photographs, and background video.
• Substack's image CDN (substackcdn.com) — the thumbnail images for the three most recent newsletter posts shown on the home page. To be precise: the posts themselves are fetched when the site is built, not when you visit, so Substack doesn't see your visit — but it does see the request for those three images.

There are no embedded videos, maps, social media widgets, comment systems, chat boxes, or tracking pixels anywhere on this site.

Server logs and visitor counts

Like essentially every website, our host records basic technical information when a page is requested — IP address, time, the page asked for, and browser type. These logs exist to keep the site running and secure. We don't use them to identify visitors and we don't combine them with anything else.

Our host, Netlify, also turns those logs into simple traffic statistics for us: how many pages were viewed, roughly how many people visited, which pages are read most, and which site sent them here. This happens entirely on Netlify's servers from data your browser already sends to load the page — no cookie is set, no script runs in your browser, and nothing is shared with an advertising network. We see totals, not people: it can't tell us who you are, and it can't follow you to any other website.

Links to other sites

This site links out to Amazon and Lulu (to buy books), to Substack (the newsletter), and to Facebook and Instagram. Once you click through, you're on their website and their privacy policy applies, not ours. We have no control over and take no responsibility for how those companies handle your information. None of our links to them carry affiliate or tracking codes.

Purchases

You cannot buy anything on this site. There is no cart, no checkout, and no payment processing here. Every "order" link sends you to a third-party retailer, and your purchase — including your payment details, address, and order history — is handled entirely by that retailer under their own terms and privacy policy. We never see your payment information.

How long we keep things

Contact form messages are kept while we're corresponding and for a reasonable period afterward, then deleted. You can ask us to delete yours at any time, and we will. Newsletter subscriptions are held by Substack under their retention practices until you unsubscribe.

Your choices and rights

Wherever you live, you can email wandertribellc@gmail.com and ask us to tell you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. We'll do it. We won't treat you differently for asking. For newsletter subscriptions, use the unsubscribe link in any mailing or contact Substack directly — that list isn't ours to edit.

If you're in California

The California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the CPRA, gives you the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to request a copy of it, to ask us to correct or delete it, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information, and we have not done so in the past twelve months. We also don't process sensitive personal information or use it to infer characteristics about you. Exercising these rights will never result in worse service.

If you're in the UK, EU, or EEA

Our legal basis for processing is straightforward: we handle contact form messages on the basis of our legitimate interest in responding to people who write to us. Newsletter subscriptions rest on your consent, given to Substack when you complete signup on their page, and withdrawable at any time via the unsubscribe link.

You have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to how we process it, and to receive it in a portable format. Because we're based in the United States and use US service providers, information you send us is processed in the US. If you believe we've handled your data improperly, you're entitled to complain to your local data protection authority — though we'd appreciate the chance to put it right first.

Children

This site is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed to children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us information, email us and we'll delete it.

Security

The site is served entirely over HTTPS and is built as static files, which means there's no database or login system on it to compromise. Form submissions are held in our hosting provider's systems under their security controls. No method of transmission over the internet is perfectly secure, but the amount of personal information involved here is deliberately small.

Changes to this policy

If we change how this site handles information, we'll update this page and revise the date at the top. Material changes will be described here rather than made quietly.
